 ual pasaje por el túnel del tiempo, este libro nos invita a
recorrer el pasado de la ciudad, desde su fundación hasta mediados del siglo XIX.  través
de centenares de dibujos, realizados expresamente por el pintor Carlos Menck
Freire, apreciaremos la imponente Ciudadela y las pétreas murallas que marcaban
su condición de plaza fuerte, a la par que visualizaremos la bahía, clave como puerto
del mar y sede del Apostadero Naval español, con jurisdicción sobre las islas Malvinas y
el Atlántico Sur. ás tarde
la recorreremos por dentro, visitando los edificios administrativos y religiosos, e
incluso las viviendas particulares. Como en un fresco viviente, iremos contemplando el ir
y venir de sus habitantes y los lugares de encuentro y vida social : las ferias y
mercados, los miradores y azoteas, los bailes, las tertulias y las funciones líricas en
la Casa de Comedias. Sin olvidarnos de las costumbres populares, las corridas de toros,
los candombes, las procesiones y los entierros, etc. os dibujos
se apoyan y se enriquecen con las vivencias de viajeros y crónicas de escritores
memorialistas, según la coordinada selección de textos que realizó el escritor Juan
Antonio Varese, con especial acento en los testimonios que hacen a la privacidad
y la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes.a
obra se constituye, de esta manera, en un imprescindible aporte iconográfico-testimonial,
complementado por una cronología histórico-edilicia y una descripción de los
principales edificios, para que el lector-viajero pueda confeccionar su propio itinerario,
tanto por el pasado como por el presente de la ciudad. |
ike a journey through the tunnel of time this book invites us to
make a tour of the city’s past, from its foundation to the middle of the 19th
century. he painter Carlos Menck Freire has done hundreds
of drawing especially so that we can appreciate the imposing citadel and the stone walls
wich made the city a historic fortress. We can also see the bay which was a key seaport
and an important Spanish naval station with jurisdiction over the Malvinas islands and the
south Atlantic.ater
on we take a tour inside, visiting the official buildings and the churches, and even the
private houses. Like in a living fresco we can watch the comings and goings of the people,
the meeting places and the social life, the bazaars and the markets, the windowed
balconies and the flat roofs, the dances, the literary get togethers and the concerts in
the "Casa de Comedias" (the first national theatre). We should not forget
popular customs such as the bullflights, the "candombes" (afro music and
dances), the parades, the funerals and so on.he
drawings are supported and enriched by the chronicles of travellers and the commentaries
of writers of the time. These texts have been selected and set out by the writer Juan
Antonio Varese, giving particular emphasis to those accounts which describe the
private lives and everyday existence of the people of the city.his
work is made up on an indispensable iconographic - testimonial component, complemented by
a historico - arquitectural chronology, and a description of the principal buildings, so
that the reader - traveller can select his own itinerary, and explore the past as well as
the present of the city. |
