ENVIRONMENTAL
DISASTER IN BRASIL: TOXIC SPILL AT THE POMBA RIVER
The
toxic leak occurred last Friday and was only addressed on Monday night.
Cataguazes Industry is the company responsible for the spill of about 20
million litres of caustic soda, chlorine and lignin (a substance that forms
the bulk of wood) that leaked from a wood pulp company’s pond
contaminating the water of the Pomba River in Minas Gerais State (Southeast
Brazil). The Pomba River is an affluent of the Paraíba do Sul River, which
flows through Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro States.
People living near the rivers Pomba and Paraiba Sul have been
warned not to drink or bathe in river water, amid reports that 100 animals
on the river banks have already died, along with hundreds of fish. The water
supply has already been cut off in six towns, leaving half a million people
without water. Soon, more cities along the river in Rio de Janeiro State
will also lose their water supply. More

ESQUEL CASE On September 12, 2002, the USA Today journal said that Canyon Resources' subsidiary, CR International Corporation, received a net payment of US$1,328,250 from Minera El Desquite as a final payment on a contract to purchase an exploration property (cateo) in Chubut Province, Argentina. The property is adjacent to the 4 million ounce Esquel gold project currently being developed by Meridian Gold Inc., the parent company of Desquite. View source This proposed gold mine known as the Esquel Cordon has local people in the Chubut Province very concerned of possible contamination problems of rivers and forest lands. The population of the Province of Chubut refutes the approval of the mining project for the Esquel Mountain Range. View source Follow-up of activities and information: http://www.esquelonline.com |
