Mr. Bartone is lead
environmental engineer of the Urban Development Division,
Infrastructure Group. He specializes in urban wastewater and solid
waste management and pollution control, with over thirty years
experience in the international field. Mr. Bartone is coordinator of
the Banks thematic group on urban environment and has
responsibility for knowledge management and staff training in this
field. He also provides specialized support to Bank lending
operations in the areas of strategic environmental planning, urban
wastewater and solid waste management and pollution control, in
recent projects such as:

(wastewater and solid waste management in tourist areas)

(solid waste management including shipboard waste reception)
- Brazil (four river
basin pollution control projects; sector study on solid waste
management)
- Chile (sector
study on health impacts of wastewater reuse in Santiago)

Prior to joining the
Banks Water and Sanitation Division in 1986, he worked fifteen
years in Latin America with PAHO/WHO as regional environmental
engineering advisor, and as technical manager of the Pan American
Center for Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences (CEPIS)
in Lima, Peru. During 1977-78 he was senior visiting research
engineer with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency working on
nutrient and toxic pollution issues in the Great Lakes. He has
taught graduate short courses in universities throughout Latin
America, has published extensively in his field, and was the
recipient of the International Solid Waste Associations 1998
Publications Award for an article on Local Management of Hazardous
Wastes from Small-Scale and Cottage Industries. |
