ESPAÑOL

The International Forum “Rethinking the City” carried out in Montreal on 27 June 2002, gathered a large number of high-level policy makers and business representatives from LAC, Canada and Italy.  The event provided a good platform for speakers, mostly local governments and the private sector, to openly express and then illustrate their views regarding local governance, focusing on the interaction of public and private sectors.

Federico Burone, IDRC Regional Director –former EMS Executive Director- opened the event and gave the floor to the plenary session discussions. All participants proposed creative and original ideas from different angles on the environmental approach and local sustainable development regarding the public-private partnership in the cities.

The event gathered a significant audience  (around 150 participants including consultancy companies, students, and civil society) attracted by the speakers’ highly qualified level.

The Mayor of Valparaiso Mr. Pinto Miranda, also Executive Director of the Mercocities Network, who was expected to be one of the great animators of this event, missed the occasion due the emergency state declared in his city as consequence of the massive floods and landslides that affected the central Chilean region a few week before. EMS expresses its full solidarity to the Mayor and the citizens of Valparaiso. Aiming at mitigating fatal consequences for the populations affected by natural disasters, the IADB is considering for approval a project to be signed together with the EMS. Its inicial phase will benefit householders and Municipalities in four countries of Central America.

On the framework of this Forum, the EMS proposes the creation of an international council (Canadian-LAC-Italian) for the promotion of the multi-stakeholder committee for local sustainable development formed by local government associations, the private sector, research centres, financial institutions and civil society.
